2 Cups of coffee per day could harm your UNBORN CHILD!

Pregnant?

Stop having any drinks with caffeine as a new study has found that 200mg of caffeine a day double the risk of miscarriage.

Drinks like
coffee, tea, fizzy colas and hot chocolate present risk for pregnant women and shoudl be totally avoided, according to a study published in the online edition of the American Journal of Obstertrics and Gynaecology.

The study looked at 1063 pregnant women from October 1996 thru October 1998 and examined the caffeine effect among women who never changed their pattern of caffeine consumption during their pregnancy.

Women who consumed 200mg or more of caffeine per day ( two or more cups of regular coffee or five 12-Ounce cans of caffeinated fizzy colas) had twice the miscarriage risk as women who consumed no caffeine.

For women who drank more than 200 mg of caffeine per day, the risk increased from 15 percent to 25 percent.

Lipsticks can cause Breast Cancer

Beware of using lipsticks! You might end up getting breast cancer, warn scientists in the US who say chemicals in lipsticks and nail varnish might interfere with the healthy development of breast tissues leading to cancer.

Before reaching the conclusion, scientists fed lactating rats with the chemical
Butyl Benzyl Phthalate or BBP found in lipstick and nail varnish, which was then absorbed by their offspring via breast milk.

The chemical altered the genetic makeup of cells in the young female rats’ mammary glands, the organs that produce milk, the online edition of a British tabloid reported.

Although the effects wore of BBP was removed from the diet, the subtle changes could have an effect later in life, the scientists say.

The man-made substance is a part of the Phthalate family of chemicals widely used to soften the plastic and are found in food packaging, toys, carpets and solvents. Past studies have linked with birth defects, kidney problems and infertility.

“We are the first to report that neonatal/pre-pubertal exposure to BBP included modifications in the gene expression mammary tissue”, said team leader Jose Russo at the Fox Chase Cancer Centre in Philadelphia.

“BBP is in the environment, so a constant exposure via inhalation and digestive tract can reach many different organs, including the breast, the researchers reported in the online journal BMC genomics.

“This is an indication that the same could happen in humans. Even if an individual is exposed to it in the beginning of life, BBP can cause alterations later in life”, he said.

“In this direction, we are evaluating if the exposure of this compound in young girls is associated with early puberty and breast development”, Russo said.

The researchers, however, said more studies were needed to determine if the chemical did actually increase the risk of breast cancer in rats. (IANS).

MOBILE PHONE - FRIEND or FOE

The mobile phone: friend or foe?

The use of mobile phones and other wireless communication are becoming an almost indispensable part of modern day life. However, the hand held devices have generated widespread controversy over whether they pose a risk to human health. The concern surrounds the risks associated with the radiation caused by the electromagnetic fields that the mobile phone emits.

Due to the proximity of a mobile phone to the head, and because the distance from the phone’s antenna to the inner ear is only a few centimetres, the auditory system is exposed to the electromagnetic radiation. The results of a study showed that a higher degree of hearing loss is associated with intensive use of mobile phones.

Various symptoms - memory or attention problems, tiredness, headaches, hearing problems - are sometimes reported. In some individuals these seem to correspond to a kind of 'electromagnetic hypersensitivity' attributable to the intense use of mobile phones or proximity to the transmitter masts which serve as their base stations.

Research on the possible health effects of exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy dates back more than 60 years and will continue for the foreseeable future. As research adds to the extensive scientific knowledge in this important area, it is believed that it will further strengthen the basis for public confidence in the safety of current and future wireless communications technologies.

One thing that I know for sure is that these signals gives awful headaches when you work in a wireless lab where three or four access points are broadcasting at the same time on different channels. I've also heard many stories about people who had their desk located directly under a broadcasting antenna and who had terrible migraines at the end of each day.

Here are a few recommendations to follow if you want remain on the safe side:

1. LIMIT your usage of mobiles to the necessary minimum.
2. Don't stand in close proximity to any antenna that is transmitting. Those that are only made to receive signals are perfectly safe. If an antenna is a directional one, it is safe for you to stay in the back or
on the side of it.

3. Don't move a device that is transmitting.
4. Don't touch any powered antenna.
